From football to fund administration - Moore's Client-On Boarding Specialist James Queree has already successfully navigated a big career change. And at the end of 2016, James spoke to Gallery Magazine about his experience with Moore Management so far and what he sees as his next steps. Here's what he had to say...
University attended: Xavier University (Bachelor's degree); Leeds Beckett University (Postgraduate degree)
Course: Sport Management & Business (Bachelor's); Business (Postgraduate)
What you wanted to be when you were eight: Professional football player
Favourite way to relax: Going for a swim and steam at the gym
Favourite possession: My 1st team shirt when I was a football apprentice for AFC Bournemouth (even though they spelt my name wrong), and my Island Games gold medal!
What made you choose to work for Moore Management?
Moore perfectly fits the profile of what I was looking for; it is a small boutique firm but has the added benefit of being part of a much larger network as it is owned by First Names Group. You get great exposure in your role from day one and you are treated exceptionally well. Coming from a sporting background, I value the importance of working in a team and being in an environment where I can aim to improve on a daily basis.
What sort of professional training do you take?
At Moore there is a big focus on professional development. They have created an environment that encourages people at all levels to 'be the best they can be'. I am a fairly new recruit, so I am currently still in the process of investigating which professional qualifications are right for me. Once I have decided what avenue I want to go down, I am going to really throw myself into studying, knowing that I have the full support of the team at Moore.
What do you do on an average day?
Without sounding clichéd, no two days are the same! Since I have joined Moore I have had a lot of exposure and insight into the various elements of fund administration. This has been the most stimulating part of working at Moore and something that you wouldn't necessarily experience at a larger organisation. It has been really helpful to get an understanding of the whole administration process start to finish. It has given me a great foundation for when I am on-boarding new clients.
What is your next step?
My goal for the foreseeable future is just to keep learning and developing my understanding of the funds industry from those around me. Working towards a professional qualification is also something I am really keen to do.
What advice would you give yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now?
To just embrace everything you do, try different things and always have a positive outlook - it will take you further. Whether you discover that you like or dislike a particular subject, you can always take something from each experience while learning from those around you. Finally, remember that what you do now or choose to do next does not have to be forever; it's just another chapter.
